Professional Counseling

Counseling or psychotherapy sessions can take many forms, and can include work with individuals, couples, families, or groups.  Sessions typically last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your insurance benefits.  Our areas of experience include:

Adults: Anxiety (e.g., phobias, social anxiety, OCD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder & Executive Functioning, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Forensics, Marital/Couple conflict, Parenting, Personality Disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Psychological Assessment, Sexual Disorders, Sexual Offenders, Substance Abuse/Dependency, Traumatic Brain Injury, and more.

Children & Adolescents: Anxiety, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder & Executive Functioning, Autism Spectrum & Asperger’s Disorders, Conduct Disorder, Depression, Functional Behavior Assessment, Parenting, Psychological Assessment, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, School Consultation, Substance Abuse/Dependency, and more.

Our staff have been trained in the use of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT).  This is a highly-effective, scientifically-supported form of treatment for all the areas of concern listed above.  CBT has two parts.  The first part, Cognitive Therapy, seeks to look at automatic thoughts and beliefs that become distorted from life experiences, and replace these with more balanced thoughts and beliefs.  Behavior Therapy seeks to look at unwanted/unhealthy patterns of behavior that have been conditioned or reinforced over time, and replace them with healthy patterns of behavior.  If the CBT approach sounds interesting or helpful to you, please contact us to learn more and to set up an initial session with one of our counselors.*

It is important to know that counseling has both risks and benefits.  Some of these risks include having to experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, anxiety, anger, or frustration.  It is not unusual for some clients to feel a little worse at the end of a session from time to time.  This happens because counseling can involve examining problematic thinking, discussing embarrassing or troubling behavior, or recalling unpleasant parts of one’s history.  Despite these risks, research shows that many people experience great benefits from counseling.  Over time, clients can feel less distressed as their relationships improve and they move towards their own goals.  While nothing is guaranteed in counseling, our experience has been that clients who remain committed to the counseling process report real results and improvements.

Counseling or psychotherapy is often covered by most insurance plans.  We accept a variety of insurance carriers and employee assistance programs that include the following:

Functional Behavior Assessment Training

Matthew Mauriello is certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services' Bureau of Autism Services (BAS) as a trainer for its two-disc DVD-based FBA training titled: "Functional Behavior Assessment & Treatment Planning."

Over a period of two or three training sessions (totaling 13 hours), participants are presented the uniform curriculum developed by BAS that includes the DVD presentation, PowerPoint handouts, and real-time practice exercises facilitated by Matthew Mauriello.

Training sessions can be scheduled with flexibility to meet the time restraints of trainees.  At the end of the training, trainees are provided with a certificate of attendance and instructions on how to access the online post-test.  Successful passing of the post-test satisfies requirements of many managed care companies who reimburse providers treating HealthChoices members with autism.  Additionally, successful completion of this training can be used towards fulfilling 13 hours of the 90-hour requirement for evidence-based coursework needed for licensure as a Behavior Specialist in Pennsylvania.

Matthew Mauriello offers a comfortable and relaxed setting for these trainings that allows for important individual attention as well as engaging discussion of relevant clinical scenarios.  Interested individual providers or agency representatives are encouraged to contact us about setting up training sessions and discussion of hourly rates for trainers.  Discounts for larger training parties may apply.

Testing and Assessments

The Mauriello Group offers testing and assessment services for comprehensive diagnostic evaluations.  Testing and assessment is the systematic integration of data and observation.  Clients are often interested in assessment to learn how their functioning compares to that of others.  Assessment has many academic, occupational, forensic, and clinical applications.  Common examples can include diagnostic assessments to determine whether or not someone needs an accommodation because of the presence of a condition, to determine a course of treatment, to determine a response to treatment, or to uncover a deeper understanding about oneself.  Our staff have been trained on a variety of personality, behavioral, and intellectual tests for use on both children and adults.

Our available testing and assessment options with included services and fees** are listed below.  We offer competitive rates with excellent service and well-written reports.
